Women can have poor bladder control at any age.  However, once they're 40, most are susceptible to poor bladder control.  This dysfunctional bladder control is usually because of age, injury and illness. It has been estimated that a mere third of people ask for opinion from their doctor to alleviate bladder control problems or obtain bladder control medication.

4.  Uphold good bowel habits by consuming lots of fruits and vegetables to keep your bowel regular. Also do a colon cleaning at least once a year.

5.  Do not strain when using the toilet as this often can decrease your pelvic floor muscles - these help maintain bladder control. This is because muscles stretch and become weak with age.  The base of the pelvis consists of layers of muscle and other tissues. These layers stretch from the tailbone to the pubic bone.

The pelvic floor muscles are weakened by:

• straining to empty your bowel
• heavy lifting
• a cough that goes on for a long time
• being overweight and not being fit
